POST-CONFERENCE TECHNICAL TOUR 1

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT HILO AND HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Date: Friday, June 26, 2022

Maximum Capacity: 100

Description

This tour begins at the University of Hawaii at Hilo with an Aloha greeting by the Chancellor and a Faculty Host, and a tour of the University, including the Department of Engineering and numerous labs with a comprehensive view of recent accomplishments and current and future projects. After the University tour is complete you will board the motor coach with your field interpreter guide/Hawaiian geologist, who will take you to the Volcanoes and provide an in-depth volcano resource briefing with visits to the Kilauea Visitor Center, Jagger Museum, Halema’uma’u Crater, and Nahuku (Thurston) Lava Tube and Devastation Trail. The guide will take you to the Volcano’s sulfur banks, where you’ll witness a live volcano, steam vents, lava flows and craters, and walk through amazing lava tubes. The tour includes motor coach transportation, lunch, healthy snacks, science educator/geologist and park rangers, and brochures and pamphlets on Hawaiian Volcanoes.

Medical Restrictions: All participants with medical conditions should come prepared with their own medication and knowledge about their condition. Air quality at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park may be affected by the gasses and ash that is currently being emitted from the plume of the Halema’uma’u Crater.

About Hawaii’s big island

To avoid confusion with the name of the entire state, the island of Hawaii is called “Hawaii’s Big Island”; it is bigger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined and you will find 11 of the world’s 13 climactic zones within this island’s shores. Home to numerous ancient Hawaiian temples, the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, and the landing spot for the first European missionaries, the Big Island is also an important place to learn about Hawaiian history. Anytime of year is a good time to visit Hilo on Hawaii’s Big Island. The average temperature is between 75°-85° F. Summer, between April and November, is warmer and drier, and trade winds keep things comfortable year-round.

TRAVEL

Tour participants are required to make their own travel arrangement from Oahu to the Big Island and from the Big Island to their return destinations. Hawaii’s Big Island has two main airports, but the most convenient airport for arrivals and departures for this tour is the Hilo International Airport (ITO). There are direct flights to Hilo from Honolulu International Airport on Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, and United Airlines. In Hilo, you will find hotels of every size as well as small, charming inns. Upon registration, tour attendees will receive a list of hotels convenient to the location of this tour to help you make your reservations.
