Description
Tour of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport proudly bears the distinction of being the world’s busiest airport, and has maintained this distinction since 1998, with an average of over 2700 arrivals and departures per day, carrying more than 250,000 passengers. It has long served as a valuable hub connecting various cities and countries around the globe. Hartsfield-Jackson is the largest employer in the state of Georgia with over 58,000 airline, ground transportation, concessionaire, security, federal government, City of Atlanta and Airport tenant employees. The direct economic impact of the airport is estimated at approximately $32.5 billion for the metro Atlanta area economy. The terminal complex measures 130 acres (52.6 hectares), or 5.8 million square feet, sporting 6 terminals with a seventh (a new 12-gate international terminal) currently under construction. To keep pace with rapid growth, both in the metro Atlanta area and regionally, the Airport continues to expand capacity and improve efficiency through a $6 billion-plus Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Two elements of this forward-looking strategy have already yielded results—the new fifth runway has provided increased capacity that is helping airlines save millions in operating expenses, and travelers now have access to a new energy-efficient car rental facility. The tour will provide an overview of the history of the airport along with an inside look at its current operations.
Tour of Delta TechOps Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Operations
Delta TechOps is the largest airline maintenance, repair and overhaul provider in North America, generating more than $500 million in revenue in 2009. In addition to providing maintenance and engineering support for Delta’s fleet of more than 750 aircraft, Delta TechOps serves more than 150 other aviation and airline customers around the world, specializing in high-skill work on engines, components, hangar and line maintenance. The Delta Technical Operations Center (TOC) Jet base, as it was originally called, opened its doors on June 21, 1960. The original Jet Base (called “TOC 1” today) housed over 1,600 employees under roof at its 9 acre facility. At the time of the dedication of this facility, Delta’s fleet included 79 aircraft, only 9 of which were jets. The first expansion of the Jet Base was completed in May of 1968 to increase space to 16 acres under roof and make room for over 3,300 employees. In 1973 the Jet Base expanded to more than twice its size to over 36 acres under roof. The second hangar, referred to as “TOC 2”, spans 785 feet wide, while another addition was made to TOC 1 in 1982 which increased its depth by 80′ to accommodate larger aircraft. The latest expansion occurred in 1991 with the addition of “TOC 3” which houses 750,000 square feet of shop and warehouse space, as well as three paint hangar bays, spread out over four floors. Today the TOC consists of a total of 63 acres under roof and performs annual maintenance operations including the production of over 133,000 aircraft components, overhaul of more than 500 engines, and maintenance support of over 2000 aircraft hangar visits including the painting of over 60 aircraft. Attendees will tour the engineering, machining, maintenance and manufacturing areas.
